Old Island Photo Colourization.

Another time-lapse Friday photo restoration and colourization, this time its an old island photo colourization. We are not open this holiday weekend. Labour Day means that the summer days are now with us and we can all now enjoy some sun and relaxation this long weekend.

Old Island Photo Colourization

This one is an old photo from the Pacific islands. The photo was old and faded. In this restoration most of the work was done during the colourization process. There were 17 different colour layers used to colour in this photograph. As well as lots of other adjustment and cloning layers.

Faded Photo Restored and Re-coloured

Faded Photo Restored and Re-coloured

The Restoration & Colourization

Today we will be talking about a faded photo restored and re-coloured. Karen brought me this wonderful old faded family photo to be restored and re-coloured. Unfortunately it was very faded and all of the colour had been bleached from it. It had as happens quite often been framed and exposed to too much sunlight. UV light from the sun stripes the colour from most most things, including photographs. This is a prime example why UV protective glass is advisable for those cherished family photos.

Fortunately we were able to restore this wonderful photo. Using Photoshop to create many layers of different colours. I was able to paint in each of the separate areas with the relevant colour. I used a graduated colour map for the skin tones. Adding shadow and highlight details to make extra definition to the facial features.

Colourising photos is perhaps one of the most satisfying type of photo restorations that I get to do.  Each photo is always unique. So the challenge is always different. Karen was very happy with the results and we were able to get the colours spot on, first time. Thanks to her precise description of the different colours for each of the clothing, hair and skin tones. The photo restoration is now framed and now display, to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Time-Lapse Friday!

It Friday again and another Time-Lapse video for you. I am really enjoying this way of showing off my work. The time-lapse format really does show just how much work goes into restoring a photo. This one is an old damaged photo that was hand painted originally.

The Restoration & Colourizing

The restoration was quite straightforward. There was lots of surface damage that was cleaned up and lots of spotting to be removed. The quality of the photo wasn't the greatest so I had the smooth out the really small spots and add some noise to hide the rest. Colourizing this particular photo was a challenge because of the high detail levels in the background and the patterns on the clothing. So I decided to use some selections to accurately target highlights and shadows in these areas. This made filling in these areas much easier.

Colourizing an Old Photo

Re-Colourizing an Old Photo

Colourizing an old photo is a very rewarding job. You can see the results appear before your eyes. The image comes alive again when new colour is added.

How to Colourize a Photo

Colourizing old black and white photos is not a new idea. The practice has been around for many years. In the old days, the colour was painted directly onto the printed photograph. Special dyes were used that penetrated the surface of the print and embedded themselves into the image. The colours usually quite bright and obvious. But I have seen some quite amazing examples that looked very realistic.

New Digital methods make the whole process much more accessible. There is also the 'undo' button, which means mistakes are much easier to correct. The painting is still done by hand. But this time using a digital pen to paint on the colours and make the image look alive.

A B&W Photo Restored and Colourized

A Colourized Photo

This weeks Restoration comes from David who wanted this wonderful old B&W photo restored and colourized. I have done another time-lapse video of this restoration so you can see the process and the amount of work required to colourise a single photo. Projects like colourizing old B&W films just involves so much work it is almost unbelievable to me.

The process of colourization is done after the photo is restored. Then I make lots of colour adjustment layers with a black mask and then use selections or the paint brush to fill these colours in one by one. Usually trying to start with background colours and build up with foreground colours as I work my way through the image. Below is the full video which you can watch on my YouTube Channel. Colour Restoration

Alan dropped off this faded photo that had lost its colour and needed restoring. Using Photoshop I was able to recover the colour and restore the vibrancy that had been lost due to sun damage.

Feedback

The PDF looks excellent and better than I had hoped.

Ken sent me this old and tired portrait that had lost its colour and needed restoration. I was able to restore the colour using Photoshop and many layers of colour hand-painted to make this wonderful portrait come to life again. Add Colour This Year

We are back! Happy new year to everyone. Towards the end of 2018, I had quite a few clients requesting photo colourization. Either from Black and white photos. Or old colour photos that have faded or become discoloured and require restoration and re-colourization

Add Colour This Year

With Peter Jacksons new Film ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ boring old black and white film into the modern colour era it is not surprising that lots of people are now realising how much of a difference it can make to an old image

This year has started off in the same way the last ended so expect to see many more colourization restorations to come.
